CH104: Chemistry and the Environment

Using anthropomorphism is a really useful technique when it comes to teaching the more challenging concepts in chemistry. If you need evidence, take a look at how elements behave at a party:. Assign each student an element, whose role they take during the lesson. I would stick to group 1, 2, 6 and 7 elements and avoid high atomic numbers as the students will be drawing the structures. You can throw in a few group 3 if you want to make bonding diagrams a little more tricky but best to avoid group 8s as they do not enjoy any form of social activity. If you have a mixed sex class you may wish to make one sex metals and the other non-metals but be aware of the high probability of sexual innuendos involving bonding and filling shells I will let you use your imagination here. This involves them finding out about appearance and uses, as well as drawing atomic structure to show electron shells. Now in the usual speed dating format, ask metals or non-metals to sit at desks whilst the others circulate round with their profiles. They have 5 minutes with each other before a bell is rung and they move on.

Element 38 in our International Year of the Periodic Table series is strontium. Named after Strontian, a village in Scotland where it was discovered, strontium finds use in glow-in-the-dark paints and in toothpastes. Element 37 in our International Year of the Periodic Table series is rubidium. Used in GPS satellites and in some types of perovskite solar cells, one of its isotopes can also be used to locate and image brain tumours. Element 36 in our International Year of the Periodic Table series is krypton.

Used in high-speed flash photography, krypton also has a link to the definition of the metre and can help detect covert nuclear facilities. Element 35 in our International Year of the Periodic Table series is bromine. One of only two elements in the periodic table that are liquids at room temperature, its compounds are used as flame retardants and were historically used in dyes.

This month features news on a method for converting plastic bottles into jet fuel components, a new record for the longest half-life ever measured, and more! Named after the moon, selenium compounds pop up in shampoos and are also partly responsible for the awful smell of skunk spray.

The periodic table , also known as the periodic table of elements , is a tabular display of the chemical elements , which are arranged by atomic number , electron configuration , and recurring chemical properties. The structure of the table shows periodic trends. The seven rows of the table, called periods , generally have metals on the left and nonmetals on the right. The columns, called groups , contain elements with similar chemical behaviours.

Try our Interactive Periodic Table of Elements that lets you sort by metals, physical states, group, and period, and view the most important elemental properties.

If you know of an interesting periodic table that is missing, please contact the database curator: Mark R. Leach Ph. Text search:. It is attributed by them to Nechaev and is apparently discussed by Ipatiev :. We would also like to mention one more version of the periodic table, namely the one offered by V. Ipatiev’s version was one of the first to have been applied in a school textbook, and is also concise and accompanied by a detailed methodological commentary. More specifically, Ipatiev is important in directing our attention to the fact that an essential feature common to all elements should be chosen if the elements are to be systematized.

Furthermore, Ipatiev also offered another crucial insight in arguing that this selected feature must satisfy certain conditions, namely: 1 it must be measurable, 2 it must be common to all elements and 3 it must be paramount, i. Ipat’ev, V.

Are the kids all safely back in school where you are? Kids cramp my style in the summer. You know the type: always out running around, heading to the pool or crowding up the stores with their boredom and unimpressed little faces. They have nowhere they have to be, really, and nothing in particular to be responsible for except keeping themselves alive and unhurt with fast food and Coppertone.

I need to chill. I never want that day to come. Until then, I should be grateful that most of the kids around here are indeed not vagrants, but rather fairly respectful almost-adults. I should give them the benefit of the doubt except for that jerky one who drives the loud, revvy sports car up and down my street at all hours of the day and night; get a job! They deserve something special for back-to-school time. More specifically, they deserve these cookies.

We love it to this day, and certainly it needs no adjustment, but I did what I always do and threw in some other things to make it interesting. My favorite flavor back then was Maple and Brown Sugar, but has since morphed into the less-sweet Raisin, Date and Walnut flavor.
